Senator Sherry Rehman, Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has welcomed the recent decisions made by the Council of Common Interests (CCI), calling them a positive step towards national unity and consensus-based policymaking.
She praised Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for his bold and principled stance on the sensitive issue of new canal constructions on the Indus River. "Chairman Bilawal Bhutto has truly represented the voice of the people in this critical matter," said Sherry Rehman.
She highlighted that it was only due to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's unwavering advocacy that the CCI meeting was convened to address Sindh's reservations regarding water distribution. “By consistently raising his voice, Chairman Bilawal not only upheld the spirit of the Constitution but also defended the 1991 Water Accord, the rights of farmers, and the future of Pakistan's environment and agriculture,” she stated.
Senator Sherry Rehman also commended the formation of a committee to devise a long-term national policy on water and agriculture with the consultation of all provinces, and the CCI’s decision not to proceed with canal construction without consensus. “This is a welcome move that reinforces cooperative federalism,” she added.
"The PPP has once again proven that dialogue, consensus, and adherence to the Constitution are the foundations of a strong and united Pakistan," said Sherry Rehman.
She also extended congratulations to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for building consensus on vital national issues like water and national security. “In the current circumstances, national unity and collective resolve are more essential than ever,” she concluded.
According to Sherry Rehman, the CCI declaration is a testament to the fact that the true strength of Pakistan lies in its people and in safeguarding the rights and aspirations of all its federating units.
